    Professor Guillebaud (pronounced gil-boe) is Emeritus Professor of Family Planning and Reproductive Health at University College London. He was a leading contributor to the recent Inquiry by the UK Parliamentary Group on Population, Development and Reproductive Health into "Population Growth: its impact on the Millennium Development Goals".

      Sustainability and urbanisation in Asia: implications for Australia

      Speaker: Professor Brian Roberts, Director, Centre for Developing Cities, University of Canberra

      Brian Roberts, who also chairs the ACT Government's Sustainability Expert Reference Group, is an experienced professional planner, project manager, academic and adviser on a wide range of issues. He has held senior positions in the consulting industry, the UN, the Queensland Government and academia.

      Brian is finalising a book for the Asian Development and World Banks on Urbanization and Sustainability in Asia, which looks at population, sustainability and urban development issues.

      "We build the equivalent of a Canberra every three days in Asia at the moment. Scary stuff."

      A general meeting for SPA members will be held at 2pm followed by afternoon tea at 2.30pm

      "OIL DEPLETION ... COMING, READY OR NOT!"

      Speaker: Danny Hannan
      Danny Hannan’s research into global oil production and pricing indicates that we face a bleak future. He predicts that cities may become unliveable, and only small towns located in regions with rich soils and dependable climate may provide satisfactory living conditions. SPA member Jill Curnow invited the audience to examine how a post-oil society might function, given that the World human population relies so heavily on cheap and readily available fossil fuels.

    • Free Public Meeting - Smaller Footprints on new Pathways

      An address similar to the keynote address Prof Douglas delivered in Wagga at the 5th Landcare Management Forum on 19 August to an audience of 500 people. He argues that the current size of the human ecological footprint threatens the survival of our species and that we must make smaller footprints on new pathways.

    • Public Forum - Living in the hothouse: how global warming affects Australia
      Guest speaker:IAN LOWE
      18 June 2005, Canberra
      Ian Lowe is President of the Australian Conservation Foundation, an emeritus professor of science, technology and society at Griffith University, an expert on global warming who has contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and author or co-author of 16 books. His latest book, just being launched, provides the theme for the forum. Ian is also a Patron of Sustainable Population Australia. His presentation will be followed by questions and discussion.

      World oil production is about to peak. Greenhouse gas emissions threaten potentially catastrophic climate change. Can there be anything more vital and urgent than the need to find, develop and implement viable methods of renewable energy production? Ray Prowse is the Manager of the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems at the ANU. The Centre, which is headed by Professor Andrew Blakers, is one of only two groups left in Australia doing research into renewable energy that have more than 25 people.
